About Our Program

I came to MAHEC to help build a residency rooted in its vision: to create a healthier community in Western North Carolina and beyond. From the beginning, that mission has been more than words—it’s a palpable, driving force that continues to inspire me. We intentionally designed our residency around this vision, aiming to develop outstanding internists who will make a lasting impact in our community and in communities everywhere.

Improving community health starts with developing excellent physicians. Here, we prepare residents to become confident, capable internists and lifelong learners. Varied teaching sites and a wide range of patient populations and pathologies give residents firsthand experience in all aspects of internal medicine. We thoughtfully structure the curriculum for each stage of your training, promoting progressive growth in a supportive environment. We feature interactive academic half-days, active learning in conferences, a variety of simulations, and career-focused preparation. We embrace real-world observations of patient interactions, regular feedback, and personalized coaching to accelerate your growth into a skilled, independent physician.

Understanding a community is essential to improving its health. Our social medicine curriculum immerses residents in the intersection of healthcare systems and community resources. We provide advocacy training, hands-on experiences, and dedicated rotations focused on social determinants of health and rural medicine. These opportunities help residents deepen their ability to care for all people while building leadership skills for any practice setting.

Thank you for taking time to learn more about our program. Here in beautiful Asheville, we believe that cultivating excellent internists goes hand-in-hand with empowering our residents to realize their professional dreams. By providing comprehensive training, individualized coaching, and a supportive environment, we prepare our residents to deliver outstanding, compassionate care and to become leaders who improve the health of Western North Carolina and beyond.
