Acting Internship: #MEDI 422

Students join one of our inpatient Internal Medicine teaching teams as an Acting Intern. Patient care is provided at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, an 815-bed academic tertiary care facility under the supervision of MAHEC Internal Medicine Residency Program residents and teaching faculty. As the Acting Intern, students assume primary responsibility for the care of assigned patients and work closely with the interdisciplinary medical team to optimize patient care. Goals include developing the initial assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients based on evidence-based guidelines and clinical standards.

Skills utilized include:

  • history-taking
  • physical examination
  • oral communication
  • critical analysis
  • diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making
  • writing daily notes
  • order entry

Students typically are responsible for 4-6 patients at a time and participate in attending bedside rounds, conferences (including morning report, grand rounds, and noon conference), and afternoon admissions. Promoting autonomy in patient care and providing real-time formative feedback are areas of specific focus for this rotation to help our Acting Interns make the most of their experience and ultimately thrive as they progress into residency.
