The Office of Student Services & Housing at MAHEC faciliates quality primary care education in ambulatory settings across Western North Carolina including rural and underserved communities. We are a liaison between health science students, community-based preceptors, and health science schools. Our services include

Support for Students
  • Assist with placements at community sites
  • Assist with facilitating onboarding at various sites
  • Provide and coordinate student housing
  • Facilitate quality educational experiences consistent with curricular goals
Support for Preceptors
  • Link to AHEC information resources
  • Represent preceptor concerns to the schools, MAHEC, and NC AHEC Program Office
  • Provide opportunities for professional development
Support for Health Science Schools
  • Assist with identifying and recruiting preceptor sites
  • Coordinate placement of students in community-based sites
  • Assist with evaluation of community-based education

WCU Health Professions

In 2016, we expanded our partnership with Western Carolina University (WCU) to increase the number and types of healthcare providers in rural areas and to increase preceptor support for these health professions. MAHEC currently provides over 5,000 annual hours of clinical training for WCU students.
