Since 1974, MAHEC's mission has been to train outstanding clinicians and keep them in the communities that need them most. We believe that where you train shapes where you practice and Western North Carolina is a place worth staying.
What makes MAHEC different is hard to summarize in a paragraph, but I'll try: we are a community-based sponsoring institution in the truest sense. Our residents and fellows care for real patients with real needs—across the full spectrum of family medicine, surgery, psychiatry, obstetrics, internal medicine, pharmacy, and more—in a region that genuinely depends on the physicians, dentists, and pharmacists we train. More than 45% of our graduates stay and practice right here in WNC. That's not a marketing statistic; it's what happens when training feels like belonging.
We currently train 233 residents and fellows across 18 accredited programs, in partnership with our primary training hospitals: Mission Health, Pardee Hospital (UNC), and Watauga Medical Center (UNC). Our programs are accredited by ACGME, CODA, and ASHP.
If you have questions about any of our programs, please don't hesitate to reach out—we're happy to talk. You can contact our GME office at gme@mahec.net or me directly at Julie.Michalove@mahec.net, or find individual program contact information on each program's page.
I hope to welcome you to Western North Carolina soon.
