Western North Carolina is currently in a state of emergency following Hurricane Helene, but we want to assure that our programs are moving forward with their upcoming recruitment seasons. Please see specific program for more details.
Our residency and fellowship programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Founded in 1974 in Asheville, NC, MAHEC was established with the mission of enhancing health across Western North Carolina and developing a skilled healthcare workforce. In 2017, MAHEC and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill strengthened their collaboration through the creation of UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC. This academic health center is tackling major healthcare challenges in WNC by combining MAHEC’s renowned expertise in interprofessional primary care with UNC’s distinguished research and educational capabilities.
MAHEC offers ACGME-accredited residency programs in family medicine (with sites in Asheville, Boone, and Hendersonville), general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and a transitional year program. Our ACGME-accredited fellowship programs include addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, maternal-fetal medicine, sports medicine (offered in Asheville and Boone), and surgical critical care. Additionally, we provide a CODA-accredited dental residency and ASHP-accredited ambulatory care pharmacy residencies, including first-year, second-year, and geriatrics-focused programs.
MAHEC participates in the National Resident Matching Program, the Dental National Matching Service, the ASHP Resident Matching Program, and other advanced residency and fellowship matching programs. We are happy to provide information about all our GME programs to support potential applicants. Please let us know how we can assist you.
