Dr. Nathan Spell served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps immediately after residency and then joined the department of medicine at Emory University as a general internist. In his 25 years at Emory, he held several education leadership roles—resident clinic director in his ambulatory practice, then associate program director, and ultimately associate dean for education and professional development, including oversight of CME (Continuing Medical Education). He held administrative positions as medical director of his practice and 10 years as Chief Quality Officer for Emory University Hospital, including starting the Emory Quality Academy for professional development in quality improvement. He joined MAHEC in August 2023 as department chair.
My professional passions are in the growth and development of physicians, interprofessional education, quality and safety, and addressing professional and health disparities. I was attracted to MAHEC because of how well the role of chair fits my experience and because of the infectious passion for the mission among everyone I’ve met here. My outlets are mountain trail running and spending weekends planning, shopping, and cooking meals for family and friends.

Her interest in microbiology was piqued when she spent her graduate thesis assessing how the human oral microbiome changes throughout decomposition in the Southern Appalachian biome. This prior experience cultivated her interest in Infectious Diseases, which is the specialty she plans to pursue following her training in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Stephanie Call was recruited to start the MAHEC Department of Internal Medicine and the Internal Medicine Training Program in the fall of 2019. She brings with her a passion for General Internal Medicine, both in the office and in the hospital, and a wealth of clinical and educational experience. Her clinical interests include primary care for patients infected with HIV, behavioral health, health coaching for the management of chronic disease and promotion of healthy lifestyle, and health screening. Dr. Call is a nationally recognized educator, recently receiving the national Associate of Program Directors in Internal Medicine Distinguished Medical Educator Award. She was also a recipient of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award - one of the highest honors bestowed by the medical education national community. Dr. Call was also recognized as Working Mother of the Year in 2012 for demonstrating that you don’t have to choose between a fulfilling career and a wonderful personal life (And, her three daughters Alex, Katie and Emma agree!).

Ritch came to MAHEC from Los Angeles, CA, and has a background in community mental health, addiction medicine, and outdoor education. He specializes in ACT, DBT, and EMDR. Ritch spent most of the 90s in Asheville working for North Carolina Outward Bound, using experiential education to provide healing experiences for his students. He and his husband are mountain bikers and rock climbers. They moved back to the area to enjoy their outdoor pursuits and start a fiber farm.

Dr. Gupta is an Endocrinologist with more than 25 years of experience. Initially, he trained in India where he had extensive experience with a variety of Endocrine disorders, including pituitary and thyroid conditions. He then participated in an Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota where he conducted research on pancreatic islet cells. Endocrinology is Dr. Gupta's passion due to the intricacies of the Endocrine systems that do so much in our bodies. He finds that there is a lot of confusion and uncertainty amongst people with endocrine disorders and he aims to help patients understand their medical condition(s) and work with them to find the best possible treatment. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gupta has lived in Asheville, NC, for almost 25 years. His wife runs a Neurology practice locally and their two sons were raised in Asheville. Outside of work, he likes to garden, hike, and paint. Recently, he picked up pickleball as a new hobby.

After residency, he returned to Atlanta to become a clinician-educator in the Grady Health System, Georgia’s premier safety-net hospital. He focused on providing care for people living with HIV at the Grady Ponce Center for Infectious Disease. At Grady, he honed his skills as a physician and teacher, serving as a clinical mentor to medical students and residents. More recently, he served as a primary care physician for low-income seniors in Atlanta. He provided HIV and hepatitis C care within his clinic system, effectively expanding access to needed specialty care. Dr. Livingston believes in meeting patients where they are, becoming their partner in navigating illness and promoting health. James's spark to pursue Internal Medicine began with assisting during an emergency in coastal South Carolina. While obtaining his bachelor's degree in chemistry, he began exploring medicine through volunteer work on a Neurological ICU at AnMed Medical Center, where he then worked as a Patient Care/Monitor Technician. He uncovered a genuine interest in his patients' stories and a fascination for the vast field of medicine. He has he continued to show his intellectual curiosity and diligence in forming rapport with patients.

Dr. Singson has been in Graduate Medical Education since finishing residency in 2014. He completed residency and a chief residency year at Indiana University School of Medicine Ball Memorial Hospital, where he later served as an Associate Program Director, clinic director, and Senior Associate Program Director. He was a master clinician and one of the instructors for the Foundation of Clinical Practice course for medical students. In 2020, he joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (Southwest) Internal Medicine Residency Program as part of the core faculty, served as a Site Director, and eventually served as Program Director. He believes in employing quality improvement principles to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. He is passionate about bedside teaching with students, residents, and patients, with patients being an active participant in their care.

Mark has always strived to understand the walks of life of those around him and implement change to promote wellbeing and a sense of community. He received two SPIRIT awards during his tenure at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital for educating his parents on their surgical procedures and aiding with their outpatient medicine and follow-up appointments. His calling to medicine is centered on demystifying medicine and helping his parents become the best versions of themselves that they choose to be. Simply put, his medical philosophy is “awkward conversations don’t have to be awkward.”

Dr. Weinrib has practiced general adult endocrinology in Asheville since 2002, after first practicing in his hometown of Montgomery, AL, for five years. He has long taught healthcare professionals-in-training, given professional lectures and community talks, conducted clinical research, and provided endocrine care for the uninsured in Buncombe (ABCCM), Henderson, and Polk (The Free Clinics) counties over the last two decades. Dr. Weinrib enjoys educating patients about their endocrine conditions and offering options for individualized treatment. He has a special interest in the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and the many forms of diabetes mellitus. He looks forward to expanding MAHEC’s endocrine services across WNC through partnerships, technology, and innovation.
