Boone Rural Family Medicine Residency

We believe family medicine is at its best when physicians know the people and places they serve—and when they have the skills, curiosity, and commitment to care for their communities in all their complexity.

At the MAHEC Boone Rural Family Medicine Residency Program, we train full-spectrum family physicians who are prepared to meet the needs of rural communities and inspired to become part of them. We call this physician-citizenship: a commitment not only to excellent patient care, but to showing up for your neighbors, understanding the challenges your community faces, and helping shape a healthier future.

Our small, unopposed residency in the mountains of North Carolina offers the kind of hands-on, relationship-centered training that prepares physicians for the breadth and responsibility of rural practice. Residents care for patients across generations and clinical settings—from the clinic to the hospital, the emergency department to the delivery room.

Our residents are entrusted with meaningful responsibility and supported by faculty who practice and teach the breadth of family medicine. Training here means working hard, learning together, and developing the clinical judgment, procedural skills, and confidence to serve as a first call for your patients and a steady presence in your community.

Along the way, you'll explore the distinctive opportunities of practicing in the mountains: wilderness medicine, point-of-care ultrasound, rural emergency care, and community-based partnerships. Boone is more than a beautiful backdrop. It is a place to belong, to contribute, and perhaps to stay.

Go where you're needed. And stay.
