Mastitis is a spectrum of conditions ranging from engorgement to abscess to subacute mastitis which often leads to early weaning from breastfeeding. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine has released an updated protocol for managing the mastitis spectrum. This training will look at the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of each condition found within the mastitis spectrum, i.e. engorgement, ductal narrowing, inflammatory mastitis, bacterial mastitis, phlegmon, abscess, galactocele, and recurrent and subacute mastitis. Management consists of general strategies that can be applied across the spectrum as well as medical interventions that are specific to each condition. When best practice treatment is received promptly, progression through the spectrum can be halted. Treatment actually begins during the pregnancy with education about normal breast anatomy and the physiology of milk production.
