This 4-hour skills course is designed to provide healthcare and dental personnel basic knowledge of IV insertion techniques and site maintenance, basic phlebotomy skills and injection techniques. In addition the curriculum will cover safety in drug calculations.
Using task trainers in the MAHEC Simulation Center, attendees will learn successful and skillful techniques to properly insert an intravenous catheter, basic phlebotomy, injection practices, and how to minimize patient discomfort and complications. This will result in improved learner confidence and an increase in first-stick success rates. Includes classroom and patient simulation experience.
The class will cover current standards of practice and legal aspects related to these skills within an individual's scope of practice.
Medical Assistants, LPNs, RNs, Paramedics, Dental Assistants, Dental Hygienists, and Pharmacists
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Accurately calculate dosages and safely administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections, including correct site identification and needle/gauge selection, with 100% adherence to safety checks (rights of medication, allergy review, and scope-of-practice limits) |
Insert a peripheral IV catheter using best practices (vein selection, catheter gauge choice, aseptic technique, securement) and initiate monitoring and site maintenance to prevent complications, demonstrating greater than or equal to 90% adherence to the IV insertion checklist and greater than or equal to 80% first-stick success on task trainers |
Perform venipuncture for lab specimens using current standards, select appropriate tubes and order of draw, and avoid common errors (e.g., hemolysis, mislabeling, contamination), achieving greater than or equal to 90% first-attempt success on task trainers |
