Athletes are often celebrated for their physical endurance, but the emotional and psychological injuries they carry are frequently overlooked.

This workshop explores how trauma, including adverse childhood experiences, identity-based trauma, and environmental stressors, show up in athletic spaces and impact injury risk, behavior, and performance.

We will examine how traditional responses to athlete challenges tend to focus on symptoms rather than root causes, often missing the deeper context behind behaviors labeled as "noncompliant," "lazy," or "distracted." Participants will be introduced to the foundations of trauma-informed care and its application to sport settings, including athletic programs, training environments, and schools. Using real-world case examples and interactive discussions, the workshop will offer actionable strategies for coaches, personal trainers, educators, and clinicians to promote healing-centered engagement, build psychological safety, and help athletes thrive beyond the icepack.

This presenter is being supported through a partnership between UNC-CH, School of Social Work, and the NC AHEC Program.
