The annual MAHEC Mental Health Lunch & Learn Series is designed to offer relevant clinical information for busy mental health practitioners. Presented via live webinar in one-hour segments, the annual series provides an environment conducive to peer interaction through chat, as well as direct connection with innovative speakers at the forefront of research and application in practice.

Heather Ulrich, PhD, is a licensed psychologist in the states of North Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware, with exceptional expertise in the fields of infant mental health, attachment, child development, family dynamics, high conflict co-parenting, relational neurobiology, trauma, and toxic stress. Dr. Ulrich has practiced in a wide variety of settings including academia, community mental health centers, private practice, and research-based programs. As a compelling and captivating speaker, Dr. Ulrich has presented practical, evidence-based information and clear solutions at national conferences for a wide variety of organizations. Currently, she has a successful practice providing telehealth-based therapy and parent coaching to families across the country. Dr. Ulrich also founded "Parent 911," an online parent coaching and education organization serving families across the United States and around the world.

Target Audience

Mental Health Professionals including Substance Abuse Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, School Counselors and other professionals interested in this subject

Objectives

Upon completion of each session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the most common pitfalls experienced by clinicians working with high-conflict co-parents as well as how to avoid those risks
  • List recommendations for structuring clinical practice, such that participants leave with concrete strategies for improving therapeutic outcomes and decreasing professional risk
  • Articulate the most common effects that crises such as natural disasters or societal division and trauma have on children and family dynamics
  • Recognize the stress or trauma impact on children and families and demonstrate the ability to develop concrete clinical strategies for responding to and supporting children and families during times of crisis
  • Review strategies for structuring therapy from intake through discharge to maximize therapeutic effectiveness for a child, while minimizing the negative impact that parental conflict or divorce has on a child's treatment and well-being
