Nitrous Oxide Sedation Monitoring of Patients in the Dental Setting

Description

This lecture/lab course is designed to fulfill the NC State Board of Dental Examiner's educational requirement for dental auxiliaries to learn how to properly observe, monitor and assist the dentist with patients who are sedated with nitrous oxide. While this class is intended for dental auxiliaries, it can also serve as a refresher for dentists. An equipment demonstration lab at the MAHEC Dental Health Center is included in the course day.

Target Audience

Dental assistants, Dental hygienists, Dentists

Objectives

At the conclusion of this lecture/discussion and demo-based class, participants will be able to:

  • Properly observe and monitor patients to assist the dentist using nitrous oxide sedation on dental patients
  • Discuss physiological and psychological aspects of pain and anxiety and related dental anatomy
  • Cite the pharmacology of agents used in nitrous oxide sedation
  • Monitor patients' vital signs, reflexes and responses while under nitrous oxide sedation
  • Relay potential hazards of nitrous oxide sedation to the dental team and others
  • Identify the equipment used during nitrous oxide sedation
