Are you looking to grow professionally as a preceptor in your work setting, and wanting to learn more about how to teach, coach and mentor others?

The preceptorship course will provide the preceptor with the foundational education needed to understand how to be successful in their role as preceptors, and facilitate a positive and effective learning experience for the preceptee. The program will cover relevant topics that are core to adult learning, and strategies for improving the learning experience.

Target Audience

RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and MAs l and any other healthcare professionals who have an interest in precepting

Objectives

  • Discuss the benefits of being a preceptor
  • Discuss the benefits of precepting utilizing a focused individualized learning plan
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of the preceptor and preceptee
  • Discuss understanding importance of different personalities, and knowing own personality type
  • Discuss the importance of different learning types and learning styles as they relate to teaching in the clinical setting
  • Examine own learning style utilizing a VARK learning assessment
  • Describe how to utilize learner assessment/planning form
  • Describe the different learning domains/Blooms taxonomy, and examples as they relate to the clinical setting
  • Define adult learning concepts and characteristics
  • Explain adult learning concepts and characteristics as they relate to precepting
  • Discuss effective communication strategies
  • Define critical thinking and clinical judgement
  • Discuss how to build critical thinking and clinical judgement skills
  • Discuss best practices for giving and receiving feedback
  • Apply feedback techniques to scenario
  • Describe how to best manage conflict in the healthcare setting
  • Apply strategies of conflict management utilizing case scenarios
  • Discuss preceptor documentation forms
  • Discuss best practice when validating a skill competency
