Objectives

  • Describe the importance of critically examining the inclusion of race in medical algorithms/tools from both EBM and equity perspectives
  • Identify at least one commonly used medical algorithm that includes race as a clinical modifier
  • Describe an approach to assessing the validity of race-based correction factors in algorithms and clinical decision-making tools
  • Identify and practice techniques for highlighting and explicating race-based medicine concepts to learners
  • Describe the importance of understanding unconscious and unexamined bias in medical contexts
  • Explain the "bias circuit," the pathway by which unconscious bias manifests in decision making
  • Describe one approach to reducing bias in medical decision making
  • Describe one approach to reducing bias in organizational cultures
