Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are a major national health concern. Rates of alcohol consumption and AUD-related mortality have risen since the COVID-19 pandemic, but AUD continues to be undertreated. This module, which provides an overview of alcohol use disorder, offers a review of optimal tools for screening for unhealthy alcohol use and evidence-based psychosocial and pharmacotherapy treatments. This program also provides information on outpatient alcohol withdrawal management, harm reduction, and special populations affected by AUD.

This training module is part of a training suite that has been developed in accordance with the recommendations from the DEA and SAMHSA for the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. This requirement applies to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, podiatrists, dentists, and other practitioners that prescribe controlled substances who are applying for or renewing their DEA license after June 27, 2023.
