People who use drugs often experience difficulties in accessing treatment, stigma in seeking or receiving care, and negative experiences in the clinical setting and at the pharmacy. The focus of this course is to reduce the potential harm of drug use by teaching patient-centered, trauma-informed, non-judgmental care strategies. This course explains the value of low barrier access to SUD care, and provides an overview of harm reduction strategies such as best practices in naloxone distribution, overdose response and prevention, and other evidence-based strategies.

This program was designed to satisfy, in part, the North Carolina Medical Board's CME requirement for controlled substance prescribers. Per NCAC rules: As of July 1, 2017 all physicians (other than residents), physician assistants, nurse practitioners, podiatrists, and dentists who prescribe controlled substances must satisfy the controlled-substance prescribing CE requirements as set forth by their licensing boards; requirements vary by discipline and board.

This document is supported by funds from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Cooperative Agreement Number NU17CE925024.
