Basic IV Skills Workshop: Insertion and Technique

Description

This 3-hour IV skills course is designed to provide nurses and learners interested in improving their IV skills with a basic knowledge of IV therapy practice. Using task trainers in the MAHEC Simulation Center, attendees will learn successful and skillful techniques to properly insert an intravenous catheter and how to minimize patient discomfort and complication rates. This will result in a boosting learner confidence and an increase in first-stick success rates.

The course has a 1-hour didactic portion that covers current standards of practice, legal aspects related to IV therapy, equipment required, site selection, step-by-step insertion instruction and possible complications. The second portion of the class provides two hours of "hands-on" practice via simulation. At the conclusion of this course, the learner will perform a return demonstration in order to be checked off on IV insertion.
