Key Issues in Assessing and Treating Serious Mental Illness

Description

During this highly interactive workshop, Marilyn Ghezzi teaches vital skills for assessing and working with clients who suffer from major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and other psychotic disorders as well as severe depression. Diagnostic criteria, including DSM-5 TR changes, will be discussed. Complications of diagnosing when there is co-existing substance use will also be examined. Participants will practice diagnosing cases and preparing comprehensive treatment plans that are person-centered and encompass a holistic approach in caring for individuals. The afternoon will focus on providing treatment using a variety of possible treatment approaches. Special attention will be given to issues regarding development and maintenance of rapport, medication adherence, substance use, and handling crises.

This presenter is being supported through a partnership between the UNC School of Social Work and the NC AHEC Program.

Participants must be fully present during this livestream seminar, with their cameras open and engaged in breakout groups as directed by the presenter. Anyone who is unable to fully attend should not register for this clinically-focused course.
