The purpose of this program is to improve the skills of individuals who provide or wish to provide interpreter services in any language in health or human services settings. Participants will learn the primary roles, ethics and techniques of professional interpreting. The importance of culture competence and confidentiality issues are stressed throughout the training.

Note: Participants must register by July 6, 2020, so that the course materials can be accessed in time.

Please note: The classes in this series are not interchangeable with those in the Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC (CCC) Interpreter Series offered in January and February 2020.

Forty hours of medical interpreter training is one of the pre-requisites to take the National Medical Interpreter Certification Examination. The first four courses in this series, combined, fulfill this part of the requirement.

Audience

This course is for bilingual individuals who currently provide interpreter services or intend to provide interpreter services, in any language, in any health or human services settings. It is also appropriate for interpreter supervisors or anyone who writes or implements Title VI compliance policies.

Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

check Discuss the nine Principles and 32 Standards (Interpreters' National Code of Ethics) for professional interpretation established by the National Council for Interpreters in Health Care (NCIHC)
check Identify professional interpreter resources to use for continued professional development
check Develop an appreciation for the competencies required for professional interpretation
check Identify culturally competent interpreter practices

Cancellation Policy

MAHEC has a pay-up-front policy for all CE programs. The only exceptions will be for pre-approved programs where an individual payment plan is appropriate. Registrations received without accompanying payment will not be processed and participants who have not paid the course fee will not be admitted into the program.

Unless otherwise noted in course materials, the following cancellation policy applies to all programs:

  • Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email, or mail).
  • Cancellations received more than 2 weeks prior to the event will receive 100% refund.
  • Cancellations received between two weeks and two full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
  • No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than two full business days prior to the event.
  • No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
  • Transfers/substitute(s) are welcome (please notify us in advance of the program).
