Curriculum Structure

Residents training in the Rural and Tribal Health Track follow the same principles of graduated responsibility and competency-based training as our core program. They also benefit from the same supportive structure of the tandem-block schedule, which is outlined under our core program curriculum.

Over the course of three years, residents in the track spend over 50% of their time in rural or tribal health areas; the duration increases over time as noted below. Throughout the program, each resident has their continuity clinic weekly during non-inpatient blocks at Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority.

Clinic

  • Cherokee-based
  • 1 day per week during intern year (on ambulatory/electives)
  • 1-2 days per week during PGY2/PGY3 year
  • Novel Integrated Care Team surrounds patients with the resources to optimize health in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Team-based practice with behavioral health, nutritionist, and pharmacy integration

Conferences

  • Video conference to ambulatory morning report
  • In-person attendance to Tuesday academic half-day
  • Supplemented by conferences/meetings at Cherokee
  • Attendance at all other usual program structures, retreats, etc.
