Description

ALSO® INSTRUCTOR COURSE

The Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Instructor Course equips current ALSO® Providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO® courses. ALSO® is an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that arms the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other members of the maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.

COURSE ELIGIBILITY

Any clinician providing obstetrical care who has already obtained their ALSO® Provider status is eligible to become an ALSO® Approved Instructor. This includes physicians as well as residents, registered nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, paramedics, physician assistants and other healthcare workers who have obtained their ALSO® Provider Status. The Also instructor course provides current ALSO providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO courses.

Any learner in the ALSO® Instructor Course who has not completed the most current version of the ALSO® online content must do so prior to the Instructor Course to familiarize themselves with the course's new educational format. Please email Lisa.James@mahec.net for more information about this requirement and access fees.

COURSE PRE-WORK

Learners will be provided an email with instructions on how to instantly access, download and print the ALSO Instructor Manual to read/review prior to the course. There are no pre- or post-test requirements. Upon completion of the evaluation and claiming of credit at the live course, the letter of participation will be emailed to each learner individually.

AFTER THE COURSE

Upon course completion, the Course Sponsor is responsible for providing post-course documentation to the ALSO® Program within 2 weeks. After the Course Sponsor has submitted all required post-course documentation, learners who successfully passed the course will be emailed letters of participation by the AAFP.

Learners will be designated as ALSO® Instructor Candidates after receiving a passing grade for this course. Instructor Candidates are then required to:

  • Be observed by an Advisory Faculty teaching in one ALSO® Provider Course within 1 year of their Instructor Course date.

  • Have the Advisory Faculty of that course recommend your status be changed from ALSO Instructor Candidate to ALSO® Approved Instructor.

Please Note: There are no wallet cards generated until the Instructor Candidate is observed teaching the first time and an Advisory Faculty recommends the Instructor Candidate have their status officially changed to an ALSO® Approved Instructor within the AAFP database. Within 4 weeks of being observed teaching a course and receiving the recommendation, the AAFP will email a wallet card to the learner indicating their new status of ALSO® Approved Instructor with applicable expiration dates.

ALSO® Approved Instructor status is maintained by teaching in either three ALSO® or BLSO courses within a five-year time period. Teaching in an ALSO® Instructor Course does qualify the same as teaching in an ALSO® Provider Course, and those who Instruct in this course may additionally receive CME credit when applicable.
