WMC-MAHEC Rural-Focused General Surgery Track
The MAHEC General Surgery Residency Program is proud to partner with UNC Health Appalachian Watauga Medical Center for this Rural-Focused General Surgery Track. Residents participating in this new rural pathway will complete dedicated rotations at a community hospital serving the High Country region, UNC Health Appalachian Watauga Medical Center, in Boone, NC. Additionally, opportunities will be available for educational experiences at smaller rural hospitals throughout Western North Carolina. Residents will experience different models of surgical care delivery characterized by greater continuity of care; broader surgeon responsibility across inpatient, outpatient, endoscopic, and operative settings; and increased participation in clinical decision-making within resource-conscious environments.
