This two-day class is the third class in the 2026 Summer Medical Interpreter Series (see series dates below). It can also be taken as a stand-alone class by those Spanish-English fluent individuals (including healthcare providers) who wish to improve their Spanish medical terminology.
The purpose of this class is to improve knowledge of healthcare and medical terminology in English and Spanish. Both formal and informal terminology will be reviewed, including pronunciation and definition of terms. Participants will complete their plan of study by learning and reviewing terminology grouped by systems of the body and creating scenarios for role plays, thereby contextualizing the terms in realistic situations.
Participants will take turns in group activity role plays; practice high register and colloquial terminology; practice proper positioning when interpreting in person; practice interpreter modes; and review Hispanic traditional healing terminology. Participants will practice and discuss sight translation; and be introduced to Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Please note: Registration must be received by July 2, 2026, so that the Level 3 course manual (included in course fee) can be printed in time
English–Spanish bilingual individuals are encouraged to participate. Because this class is taught entirely in Spanish, proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish is required. Completing the Level 1 Foundations class in this series is highly recommended but not required.
Upon completion of Level 3, the participant will be able to:
Cite major organs of the body, their function and their names in English and Spanish |
Identify common prefixes and suffixes in medical terminology in English and Spanish |
Complete a plan of study to improve and maintain skills and to meet the requirements of certification in professional medical interpretation |
