An Undergraduate Medical Internship for Those with a Heart for Rural Western Appalachia

The WNC Healthcare Experience and Rural Training (HEART) internship is designed for undergraduates from rural communities in North Carolina who are rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This is a paid internship with weekly interactive trainings and a MAHEC-led project. Each summer, four students are placed in a rural primary care practice for one day per week where they participate in clinical shadowing activities.

WNC HEART interns will have the opportunity to network and interact with other student learner groups at MAHEC, including the MAHECxplorer and UNCA undergraduate interns.

Internship Dates June 15, 2026 – July 24, 2026 (approximately 20-25 hours per week over 6 weeks)
Qualifications

All interested applicants must:

  • Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Be from any of North Carolina’s rurally designated counties
  • Have a dedicated interest in practicing as a healthcare provider in a rural community
Requirements

Your application must include the following:

  • Current résumé
  • Unofficial transcript(s)
  • One-page personal statement describing your interest in rural healthcare
