A General Internship for Undergraduate Students Interested in Healthcare

The MAHECXplorer internship offers undergraduates in Western North Carolina a unique opportunity to explore diverse disciplines within the healthcare field. This paid, 120-hour summer program is designed for students with an interest in clinical roles and beyond.

Interns will:

  • Participate in clinical shadowing and non-clinical experiences with MAHEC faculty and staff based on individual interests*
  • Contribute to an organizational or community project
  • Attend weekly interactive training sessions on a variety of healthcare topics
  • Engage in hands-on learning in the MAHEC Simulation Center
  • Network with peers, including WNC HEART and UNCA interns

*Applicants should have some interest in a clinical role due to the shadowing component, but the program welcomes students with a range of clinical and non-clinical interests.

Internship Dates June 15, 2026 – July 24, 2026 (approximately 20 hours per week over 6 weeks)
Qualifications

Must be from one of the following 16 westernmost counties in North Carolina:

Buncombe Cherokee Clay Graham Haywood Henderson Jackson Macon Madison McDowell Mitchell Polk Rutherford Swain Transylvania Yancey
Requirements

Your application must include the following:

  • Current résumé
  • Unofficial transcript(s)
  • 500-word personal statement describing your interest in healthcare, future professional goals, and qualifications for the internship
