A Pre-Healthcare Professions Internship for UNC Asheville Students

UNC Asheville and MAHEC’s Center for Health Professions Education have partnered to offer a summer internship exclusively for UNC Asheville students preparing for careers in clinical healthcare. This paid, 160-hour experience is designed to support students on their path to graduate-level medical professional programs by providing hands-on learning, mentorship, and resources.

Interns will:

  • Participate in clinical shadowing across multiple specialties
  • Contribute to an organizational or community project
  • Attend weekly interactive training sessions on a variety of healthcare topics
  • Engage in hands-on learning in the MAHEC Simulation Center
  • Network with peers, including WNC HEART and MAHECxplorer interns

Each summer, 10 interns work alongside physicians, residents, physician assistants, pharmacists, dentists, and other providers in divisions such as:

Dentistry Family Medicine Internal Medicine Ob/Gyn Pharmacy Psychiatry

Internship Dates June 1, 2026 – July 24, 2026 (approximately 20 hours per week over 8 weeks)
Qualifications

All interested applicants must:

  • Be a rising sophomore, junior, senior, or post-baccalaureate student at UNC Asheville
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA and completed at least (2) biology and/or chemistry courses
  • Possess a strong interest in pursuing a graduate-level program for a medical profession in medicine, pharmacy, or dentistry (other allied health professions may also be considered)

  • 500-word personal statement describing your interest in healthcare, future professional goals, and qualifications for the internship
