WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and Peer Counselor Program Manager Quarterly Update

Description

The Quarterly Update for Peer Counselors and Peer Counselor Program Managers is a time for continuing education and skill building for peer counselors. At the end of the Quarterly Meeting, the program managers are invited to meet with other program managers to share their concerns and troubleshoot. There will also be a support group for peer counselors offering them a time to meet other peer counselors and share their questions and concerns as a peer counselor. During a conversation with a peer counselor client, a peer counselor covers many different topics in a short period of time. Categorizing the information gleaned during the conversation into one of the twenty-two topics provided in Crossroads can be challenging. The goal of this session is to provide guidance on what could be included in each Breastfeeding Topic area. Working in a busy clinic with participants needing lots of feeding support can be challenging, especially as our lactation knowledge grows. Case scenarios will be used to look at providing lactation care to participants that are within our position's scope of practice. It is important for peer counselors and program managers to have an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and troubleshoot with their peers.
