Perinatal Substance Use Disorders 101 provides a foundational knowledge of substance use disorders in pregnant people and provides learners with the tools and information needed to provide safe, evidence-based, trauma-informed care.

Topics will include epidemiology, screening, and treatment for SUDs, including medications, behavioral health interventions, and the role of addressing social determinants of health to optimize care. Consideration will also be given to the stigma faced by patients, barriers to care, decreasing risks in the clinical setting, engagement with social services, and criminal legal involvement.

The target audience is the interdisciplinary team with a focus on inpatient and outpatient nurses, social workers, counselors, and medical providers.

This training introduces key topics that affect patients with perinatal substance use disorders (PSUDs), including review of epidemiology and biology of SUDs, screening and treatment of PSUDs, maternal/fetal risks of PSUDs and treatments.

We also articulate best practices in caring for the birthing parent and neonate affected by PSUDs, including patient education and delivery expectations; barriers to care including stigma and SUD myths; and education and interdisciplinary information sharing for the PSUDs team.

Approximate time to complete the course: 3.5 hours
Learner content includes: video and corresponding course handouts
Participants have until August 14, 2028 to complete this course and access course materials.
