In North Carolina, any person or institution with cause to suspect child abuse, neglect, or dependency is legally required to report it. For professionals working with children and families, this responsibility can create unique challenges in balancing support and trust with complex decisions about when to break confidentiality.
This training will demystify the organizations and systems that respond to maltreatment reports, helping participants better understand their roles and responsibilities in interacting with child welfare agencies and law enforcement. The program will review key elements of the NC Juvenile Code, outline the Department of Social Services's response process, and explore ethical tensions that arise when reporting suspected maltreatment. Best practice guidelines for decision-making and communication with families will also be covered.
