DSM-5-TR: Updates and Implications for Clinical Practice

Description
This three-hour workshop highlights changes made to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in the 2022 publication of DSM-5-TR. These changes may be understood through the lens of the historical development of the DSM, as well as through its basic premises and theoretical outlook. The presenter will also review the process of differential diagnosis and will provide tips and strategies for using the DSM in a manner which reinforces therapeutic values and considers the client's point of view as well as cultural diversity. Case examples will be used to illustrate key concepts.

The presenter for this workshop is being supported through a partnership between the UNC School of Social Work and the NC AHEC Program.
Target Audience
Licensed mental health practitioners, including licensed clinical social workers, licensed clinical mental health counselors, licensed psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists and licensed clinical addiction specialists, who diagnose and/or treat mental health disorders using the DSM-5-TR.
Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- List the key changes in diagnostic criteria for various disorders in the 2022 DSM-5-TR Manual
- Explain the historical development of the DSM and its basic premises and limitations in describing human behavior
- Describe specific strategies for using the DSM in a manner which reinforces therapeutic values
