School Nurse Clinical Competency Workshop

Description
Calling all school nurses in Western North Carolina and beyond as well as pediatric nurses and teachers! Please join us for a dynamic day of learning in MAHEC's Simulation Center. This workshop will combine lecture and simulation to educate school nurses on how to handle common school injuries, complex medical needs of students, and support the mental health of children and teenagers. Simulation scenarios and skill stations will be used to give participants hands on experience and real time feedback to better prepare them to handle childhood diseases and emergency situations. A light breakfast as well as lunch is included in the registration cost. Also, please call registration to see about getting a discounted rate for 5 or more nurses who want to attend from the same school nurse program.

- Review updates on diabetes management in the school aged population
- Explore pediatric asthma with an expert in the field
- Identify the school nurse's role in caring for a head injury
- Exhibit how to manage a seizure in a student
- Demonstrate how to perform an in and out catheterization on a pediatric manikin
- Discuss the steps of providing tube feeding and ostomy care to a school aged child
- Recognize an overdose and respond appropriately
- Identify self-harm and suicidal behaviors in children and teenagers
- Understand the legal boundaries of school nursing
