Dec 31–Mar 10, 2020 Closed Allied Health Nursing

Description
This 3-hour IV skills course is offered as either a live program or an online/live blended program. It is designed to provide all nurses and learners interested in improving their IV skills with a basic knowledge of IV therapy practice. Using task trainers in our state-of-the-art Simulation Center, attendees will learn successful and skillful techniques needed to properly insert an intravenous catheter and how to minimize patient discomfort and complication rates. This will result in a boosting of confidence and increase in first stick success rates.
Option 1: Classroom Learning
The live format is a 3-hour course within the Simulation Center that covers current standards of practice, legal aspects related to IV therapy, equipment required, identifying the patient, selecting the site, hand hygiene, and complications. This program features an expert speaker on IV therapy and requires passing a pre- and post-test. Once you have passed the post-test you will be provided time to practice on manikins and then demonstrate to an instructor how to perform IV therapy on an adult manikin.Option 2: Blended Learning (Online + Classroom)
Online Portion | 1 hour
The online format incorporates "flipped learning." Class materials will be supplied to registered learners one week prior to the live program with the expectation that the participant take at least one hour to review basic information prior to the in-person workshop, for full credit. This self-paced format covers current standards of practice, legal aspects related to IV therapy, equipment required, identifying the patient, selecting the site, hand hygiene, complications and features pre- and post-test study questions. This option allows participants to work at their own pace and when it is most convenient to them. The platform is easy to access through a high-speed internet connection and can be taken at one sitting or reviewed multiple times to allow for additional review time. The participant will have one week to complete the online module, pre- and post-test and demonstration of IV therapy on an adult manikin. No extensions will be granted as MAHEC is offering multiple start dates to accommodate learner schedules.
Classroom Portion | 2 hours
Following completion of the online portion, online learners will join classroom learners in the Simulation Center on the MAHEC campus to practice on task trainers and then demonstrate to an instructor how to perform IV therapy on an adult arm task trainer.
