19DE004 - Coronal Polishing for the DA II

This lecture and lab-based course includes a comprehensive 3-hour lecture, followed by a 4-hour clinical lab session to provide the basic concepts and techniques in polishing all exposed tooth surfaces with a rubber cup or brush driven by a slow speed hand piece. This course meets the education requirements to prepare the DA II for core competence in coronal polishing as mandated by the NC Board of Dental Examiners.

Each participant must complete the forms listed below and scan/email to nancy.walker@mahec.net or fax to her attention at 828-257-4768. These forms must be received in advance of the program date and no later than October 27, 2018.

  2. Medical/Dental History Form
  3. Proof of Professional Liability Insurance coverage
  4. Verification of DA II Form

Participants must bring:
  • lab coat
  • safety goggles
  • scrubs are recommended, but not required
  • hand piece: Participants must bring a slow speed hand piece or hygiene hand piece capable of accepting disposable prophy angles. If a hand piece is brought that only accepts individual prophy cups (screw-type or latch type) please bring 6-8 prophy cups along with the hand piece.

Objectives

  • Discuss dental terminology related to coronal polishing
  • Comply with North Carolina rules and regulations related to coronal polishing
  • Recognize types of coronal tooth stains and deposits
  • Describe the types of abrasives that may be used in coronal polishing
  • Select appropriate polishing agents for different types of restorative materials
  • Demonstrate proper techniques and infection control related to coronal polishing in a supervised lab educational session
