Teaching Practice
MAHEC is an academic health center and teaching practice, committed to providing high-quality, compassionate, evidence-based care while also training the next generation of healthcare professionals. Our goal is to care for you as a whole person—physically, emotionally, and respectfully—throughout every stage of your life.
Because MAHEC is a teaching facility, your care may involve a team of clinicians, including physicians, advanced practice providers like nurse practitioners and physician assistants, resident physicians, and learners such as medical students or advanced practice trainees.
Medical students and other trainees are either in medical school to become a doctor or enrolled in a degree program for another clinical role.
They may help gather your history, perform exams, or observe your care as part of their education. They always work under the close supervision of experienced providers.
Residents are doctors who have graduated from medical school and are completing specialized training in their chosen field through a residency program.

Fellows are licensed doctors who have completed specialized training through a residency program and are now engaged in additional sub-specialty training.
Fellows focus on specialized care and procedures. Depending on their year of training, fellows may even be Board Certified in their specialty. Learn more about MAHEC's fellowship programs
Advanced practice providers are Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, or Physician Assistants.
They have special training and are licensed to diagnose, treat, and manage many common medical conditions while working closely with your medical team. They can also prescribe medications.
Attending physicians and experienced clinicians are senior healthcare professionals who have completed all of the required education and training in their field.
These providers are responsible for your care and treatment. They closely supervise all care across the team to ensure safety, quality, and respect at every visit.

This team-based approach allows us to provide thoughtful, collaborative care and ensures that every recommendation is reviewed and supported by experienced clinicians.
Our team works together to respond to messages, refill requests, and concerns as efficiently as possible. When you contact our office, you may hear back from a nurse, resident, or other team member working closely with your clinician. This helps us ensure timely, coordinated care.
During hospital stays, your care is provided by the hospital-based clinical team working around the clock. This team includes a range of trained and supervised clinicians who collaborate to provide safe, respectful care. Your hospital care team may be different from the providers you see in the MAHEC clinic, and care is guided by hospital-based teams and schedules.
For obstetric patients: While we strive to consider patient preferences whenever possible, we cannot guarantee a specific provider or an all-female team at the time of delivery.
