This Wilderness First Aid course prepares participants to assess, manage, and respond to medical and traumatic emergencies in remote or resource-limited environments. Through a combination of hands-on scenarios and practical skill development, learners build competence in patient assessment, environmental risk management, injury stabilization, and decision-making for evacuation or continued care. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, improvisation, and teamwork, enabling participants to provide safe, effective care when definitive medical support is delayed.

CPR/AED certification is a requirement to attend this course. If you have not obtained this certification, you can attend the same-day course as noted below:

10/15/2026 (optional BLS, CPR, AED course offering 8:00 am - 10:00 am) prior to the start of this course. Register here: https://mahec.net/home/event/77385 - limited spaces available; register early. Registration for BLS certification requires an additional fee, which is not included in the Wilderness First Aid registration fee.

All participants must be 18 years or older.


This course is a certification course for American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid. Participants completing the full course will receive an American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid certification.

Audience

Emergency medical personnel, camp counselors, camp staff, school nurses, outdoor leadership, outdoor leaders, and any individuals who would like to be more prepared in the wilderness or in a remote location to offer first aid to someone who has an injury or an illness.

Objectives

check During this course learners will use SAMPLE as a mnemonic to obtain a history and identify MOI, recognizing at least two priority areas in 2 out of 3 case scenarios
check By the end of this course, learners will complete a primary assessment in a simulated patient scenario within 5 minutes, correctly performing 100% of the critical steps
check During this hands on course learners will accurately complete a SOAP report and deliver a concise handoff briefing within 5 minutes in a simulation exercise

Cancellation Policy

MAHEC has a pay-up-front policy for all CE programs. The only exceptions will be for pre-approved programs where an individual payment plan is appropriate. Registrations received without accompanying payment will not be processed and participants who have not paid the course fee will not be admitted into the program.

Unless otherwise noted in course materials, the following cancellation policy applies to all programs:

  • Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email, or mail).
  • Cancellations received more than two weeks prior to the event will receive 100% refund.
  • Cancellations received between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
  • No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than five full business days prior to the event.
  • No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
  • Transfers/substitute(s) are welcome (please notify us in advance of the program).
