Professionals who work with children and adolescents are often the first to notice when something isn't right. Changes in behavior, mood, relationships, or performance can signal serious concerns such as suicide risk, abuse, exploitation, dating violence, or bullying. Early recognition and action can make a critical difference.

This interactive training provides practical tools to identify warning signs, respond effectively to disclosures, document concerns, and navigate reporting and referral pathways. Through case studies and real-world scenarios, participants will explore key indicators of youth risk and strengthen skills in trauma-informed response and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Designed for professionals across education, healthcare, behavioral health, and community settings, this course offers a clear framework for intervention, supports safer environments for youth, and reviews North Carolina reporting requirements and prevention strategies aligned with best practices.

Psychologists, Nurse Care Managers, Mental Health and Substance Use Professionals, TCM Care Managers, Extenders, Supervisors, and family members

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

check Identify behavioral, emotional, and situational warning signs associated with suicide risk among children and adolescents
check Distinguish between healthy relationships, teen dating violence, bullying, harassment, and typical peer conflict
check Demonstrate appropriate response strategies when children or adolescents disclose safety concerns or exhibit warning signs of distress
check Recognize indicators that may suggest child sexual abuse, grooming behaviors, exploitation, human trafficking, or teen dating violence
check Describe North Carolina reporting requirements and response expectations related to suicide concerns, child abuse, human trafficking, bullying, and student safety
check Recognize how individual, family, cultural, and community factors may influence the identification of risk, disclosure of concerns, and engagement with support services among children and adolescents

Cancellation Policy

MAHEC has a pay-up-front policy for all CE programs. The only exceptions will be for pre-approved programs where an individual payment plan is appropriate. Registrations received without accompanying payment will not be processed and participants who have not paid the course fee will not be admitted into the program.

Unless otherwise noted in course materials, the following cancellation policy applies to all programs:

  • Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email, or mail).
  • Cancellations received more than two weeks prior to the event will receive 100% refund.
  • Cancellations received between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
  • No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than five full business days prior to the event.
  • No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
  • Transfers/substitute(s) are welcome (please notify us in advance of the program).
