The escalating addiction crisis highlights the urgent need for more effective, family-centered approaches to treatment. While research has moved beyond traditional disease and 12-step models, many clinicians still understand how addiction presents without fully addressing why it develops or persists. Individuals with substance use disorders often cycle through multiple treatment attempts, while families experience significant emotional and practical strain with limited support. This workshop offers a creative exploration of strategies that harness the power of the family system to improve engagement, coordination of care, and long-term recovery outcomes.

Participants will examine the Syndrome Model of addiction (Shaffer et al., 2004) and be introduced to the GATE Model, a practical, graphic tool designed to support assessment, referral, and resource allocation across the continuum of care within integrated healthcare systems. The session also explores IntraVention, a trauma-informed, person-centered approach rooted in the work of John T. Edwards, PhD, which helps families identify and change interaction patterns that unintentionally sustain addiction. Emphasis is placed on strengthening family capacity to disrupt cycles of denial and enabling while fostering healthier systems that support recovery.

Cancellation Policy

MAHEC has a pay-up-front policy for all CE programs. The only exceptions will be for pre-approved programs where an individual payment plan is appropriate. Registrations received without accompanying payment will not be processed and participants who have not paid the course fee will not be admitted into the program.

Unless otherwise noted in course materials, the following cancellation policy applies to all programs:

  • Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email, or mail).
  • Cancellations received more than two weeks prior to the event will receive 100% refund.
  • Cancellations received between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
  • No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than five full business days prior to the event.
  • No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
  • Transfers/substitute(s) are welcome (please notify us in advance of the program).
