It’s about you: your mind, body, feelings, needs... your life!

What is the I/DD Consult Clinic?

Our clinic for older adolescents and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) is located at MAHEC Family Health Center at Biltmore and MAHEC Health Center at Cullowhee. The clinic is for patients new to MAHEC or patients who are established at MAHEC.

At the clinic, you will receive:

  • More time at your appointment to talk about what matters to you
  • Specialized health screenings such as vision and hearing
  • Onsite support for nutrition and medication review
  • Referrals to specialists, dental care, mental health therapists, psychiatrists, and community services, if needed
  • Family/caregiver support and education
  • A comprehensive plan to help you get and stay healthy

Please note that our clinic cannot provide formal I/DD diagnoses.

Who will I see during my visit?

Your care team may include 1-2 physicians, a medical assistant, pharmacist, dietitian, and/or Vaya Health nurse navigator or care manager. Vaya Health works closely with MAHEC’s I/DD team to create a care plan. They are the local managed entity/managed care organization that manages Medicaid services for people with I/DD in Western North Carolina.

How can I get an appointment?

The I/DD clinic accepts referrals from non-MAHEC doctors for one-time assessments. You can keep your usual primary care provider. We offer in-person and video visits.

What happens after the visit?

After the assessment, the team will make recommendations to your primary care doctor and make recommendations for your continued care. If you do not have a primary care provider we will refer you to one.

To schedule an appointment, please call MAHEC Family Health Center at 828-257-4730 and ask for a Family Health Center I/DD Consult.
