Student Rotations

The Office of Regional Primary Care Education at MAHEC facilitates quality, community-based primary care education for students from health sciences schools affiliated with the NC AHEC Program.

The Office of Regional Primary Care Education (ORPCE) at MAHEC faciliates quality primary care education in ambulatory settings across Western North Carolina including rural and underserved communities. We are a liaison between health science students, community-based preceptors, and health science schools. Our services include

Support for Students

  • Assist with placements at community sites
  • Provide and coordinate student housing
  • Facilitate quality educational experiences consistent with curricular goals

Support for Preceptors

  • Implement protocols for payments to eligible sites
  • Link to AHEC information resources
  • Represent preceptor concerns to the schools, MAHEC, and NC AHEC Program Office

Support for Health Science Schools

  • Assist with identifying and recruiting preceptor sites
  • Coordinate placement of students in community-based sites
  • Assist with evaluation of community-based education

WCU Health Professions

In 2016, we expanded our partnership with Western Carolina University (WCU) to increase the number and types of healthcare providers in rural areas and to increase preceptor support for these health professions. During the 2020-2021 academic year, MAHEC provided over 6,500 hours of clinical training for WCU students.
