Mission Hospital was recently recognized by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program as top 10% nationally. The trauma service admits more than 3000 patients annually and the emergency department visits total more than 90,000 yearly.  The eight trauma physicians are all certified in general surgery and critical care and care for trauma, emergency surgery, and the patients in the neurotrauma intensive care unit.
 

Critical Care Surgery Rotation: #SURS 427
The Critical Care Surgery Rotation is a four-week elective at Mission Hospital under the direction of the trauma service. The student will be primarily responsible for seeing critically ill patients in the Neurotrauma ICU. These patients include multiply injured trauma, neurology and neurosurgical patients. After daily team sign-out rounds, the student will work with team members assigned to the Critical Care Service. The student will function at a high level and will work daily with assigned patients. As new patients present, the student will assist in their evaluation, resuscitation, and ongoing management. Opportunity will exist for students to participate in bedside procedures such as central venous lines, tracheostomies, arterial lines, and PEG tube placement.

 

Acute Care Surgery Acting Internship (AI) Rotation: #SURY 439
The Acute Care Surgery Acting Internship Rotation is a four-week elective at Mission Hospital under the direction of the trauma service. The student will be primarily responsible for seeing emergency department and intensive care unit trauma and general surgical patients. After daily team sign-out rounds the student will work with team members assigned to the Acute Care Surgery Service. The student will function at a high level and work daily with assigned patients. As new patients present, the student will assist in their evaluation, resuscitation, and operative management of Acute Care Surgery patients which may include both general surgery and trauma surgery patients. The student will participate in clinic to experience longitudinal follow up of emergency general surgery patients.
