Benjamin Gilmer, MD, MS, Director
MAHEC Family Health Center at Cane Creek
1542 Cane Creek Road
Fletcher, NC 28732
As a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Gilmer discovered the Asheville area as a young boy and always longed to live here. Following undergraduate studies in French and neuroscience at Davidson, he moved to Paris to study medicine at the Sorbonne two years. This experience inspired him to return to his science roots.
Gilmer then returned to NC where he taught for six years and pursued a graduate degree in neurotoxicology prior to finishing medical school at East Carolina University. While at ECU, he was inspired by the story of Albert Schweitzer and, as a Schweitzer Fellow, lived and worked at his hospital in Gabon, Africa. Since then, he and his wife, Deirdre, have continued to travel and provide healthcare for communities in the developing world including Ecuador, Nicaragua and Honduras.
MAHEC offers the perfect opportunity to pursue his passions for serving in the developing world, teaching, and practicing full-spectrum family medicine including OB, all while living in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. As a faculty member, he is interested in building upon an already strong global health curriculum with our Shoulder-to-Shoulder global health partners.
