NC AHEC Scholars and Health Careers
The Health Careers Education Awareness Programs are designed to increase awareness of education opportunities that will heighten knowledge of health careers and workforce diversity in the region by providing practical information to assist in guiding students in making informed decisions about careers in healthcare. This initiative is also designed to build linkages with the K-12 education communities. To meet these goals, we start recruiting in the early stages of education.
The Minority Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP) is designed for under-represented minority high school seniors enrolled in Asheville City and Buncombe County schools that participate in school-sanctioned internships. Candidates should have interest in the pursuit of a high-level health career. Students apply in their junior year of high school. To be eligible for this internship, students must have a minimum weighted grade point average of 3.0, qualify as an under-represented minority, have a strong desire to pursue a career as a physician, pharmacist, dentist, physical therapist or physician assistant, have an active record of work and/or community service, and have access to reliable transportation.
Ideal candidates are excited about a career in healthcare, mature, responsible, focused, need minimal supervision, dependable, practice good oral and written communication skills, and have an excellent attitude and personality.
This program is a collaborative effort of the Asheville-Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement (ABIPA), the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), Mission Health, and the Western Carolina Medical Society.
Applications for the 2020-21 academic year are now being accepted. Deadline to submit an application is 5:00pm on December 13, 2019.
