Student Summit 2019

Buncombe Youth Host Student Summit on Drug Use and Addiction

On March 21, The Partnership for Substance Free Youth and community partners in Buncombe County recently hosted future community leaders to learn about the current state of addiction at the 2019 Student Summit. This student-led initiative focused on ways young people can build their capacity for a healthier and safer future.

At this year’s summit, more than 70 students from high schools across Buncombe County gathered at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly to learn more about addiction and about what they could do prevent it and support peers who are struggling with drug use and addiction. Peer-to-peer approaches have been shown to be an effective strategy for drug abuse prevention.

Over the course of the day, students had the opportunity to select from a variety of workshops and activities. Workshop topics included the science of addiction, alternative coping skills, creative communication strategies, and exploring ways students can make an impact in their schools and communities.
