For Residents:

If patient consents:

  • Residents will monitor flags in EHR to guide the staffing approach
  • The flag in the chart will include
  1. Study ID number
  2. Randomized initial encounter type (Direct or Indirect supervision)
  3. 1/2 or 2/2 to indicate whether patient is on first or second encounter type (flag will be not be changed until they have completed designated encounter type)

Use script as follows at end of interview:

Direct: “As a resident in training I have a supervising attending. I am going to discuss your case with my supervisor, and then return with them for us to discuss our recommendations. Additionally, after the appointment we will send you the short survey to fill out online about your appointment today.”

Indirect: “As a resident in training I have a supervising attending. I am going to discuss your case with my supervisor, and then return by myself to discuss our recommendations. Additionally, after the appointment we will send you the short survey to fill out online about your appointment today.”
