Mission Hospital was recently recognized by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program as top 10% nationally. The trauma service admits more than 3000 patients annually and the emergency department visits total more than 90,000 yearly.  The eight trauma physicians are all certified in general surgery and critical care and care for trauma, emergency surgery, and the patients in the neurotrauma intensive care unit.

Acute Care Surgery Acting Internship (AI) Rotation: #SURY 439

This is a 4 week elective rotation at Mission Hospital under the direction of the trauma service. The student will be primarily responsible for seeing emergency department and intensive care unit trauma and general surgical patients. After daily team sign-out rounds the student will work one-on-one with the attending surgeon assigned to the intensive care unit. The student will function at a high level and work daily with assigned patients in the ICU. As new patients present, the student will assist in the evaluation and resuscitation of code trauma patients or other ICU consults from the neurology and neurosurgery services. The student will participate in clinic three afternoons a week to experience longitudinal follow up of trauma and emergency general surgery patients and will also be the first assistant for operative procedures performed on the service.
