RN Refresher Program

The RN Refresher Program was developed in the late 1980’s in response to an ongoing nursing shortage. Between 1990 and 2012, over 3,400 nurses enrolled in the program offered through each of the nine regional AHECs and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Nurse Refresher Program consists of a self-study theory course and a clinical practicum originally designed for nurses with an inactive license. However, nurses who have active licenses but have been away from the besdside for an extended period of time may also enroll.

The self-study theory course, “Medical-Surgical Nursing Review,” includes 24 modules on topics in the field of Nursing. The Friday Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers 14 continuing education units, which is equivalent to 140 Contact Hours upon program completion.

The clinical practicum (available only in North Carolina) consists of 160 hours in a medical-surgical unit working one-on-one with a preceptor. It offers 16 Contact Hours that are awarded by the regional AHEC or by the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. The clinical portion of the program is coordinated by regional AHEC Nurse Refresher coordinator or by a faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. The clinical practicum can begin only after the self-study theory course has been completed. Contact Hours will be awarded for successful completion of the self-study theory course whether or not a clinical practicum is completed.

Upon successful completion of both the didactic and clinical portion of the course, the participant is eligible to apply for reinstatement of his/her nursing license through the North Carolina Board of Nursing. More than 67% of nurses who completed the full program over the past five years have returned to work in nursing in North Carolina.  Please contact Bonnie Garner, MS, CPN, RN, Refresher Coordinator, to obtain more information and to determine program eligibility. Program details, including fees and eligibility, are provided on the Friday Center Web site.
